Choose a Dictation Route for AI Work on Mac

Drafted and reviewed using AI assistance.

On this page

Start with where the words need to end up. A paragraph for a visible text field, a carefully bounded coding request and a reply to one of several conversations are different jobs. They may not need the same input route.

Keep typing or system Dictation if it already handles your task comfortably. Consider another text-entry app when you need a specific, documented drafting feature. Consider a conversation companion when viewing and replying within its supported task workflow solves the problem you actually have.

Follow the destination first

Apple's Dictation guide describes entering speech at the insertion point in an app. A separate step still determines which AI conversation you opened. CueSpec documents a Mac companion route for viewing Codex tasks, preparing drafts and deliberately replying in the selected conversation. These are different parts of the workflow. Apple Dictation guide · CueSpec workflow scope

Use this decision tree as a starting point:

Does the request consist mainly of exact symbols or a tiny correction?
Yes -> Start with typing or paste.
No -> Is the correct destination field already open and recognizable?
Yes -> Try system Dictation before adding another app.
No -> Open and identify the destination first.

After a short attempt, what is still awkward?
Producing or editing the draft -> Compare the specific drafting
                                   features of text-entry apps.
Finding tasks and replying in their context -> Consider a companion
                                                for that supported workflow.
Speaking in the room -> Type or move to a suitable place.

You can combine routes. Dictate the explanation, paste the exact filename and edit the final sentence with the keyboard. A tool choice does not need to become a rule that every word must be spoken.

Compare the stages, not a list of slogans

The matrix separates documented behavior from questions to ask of a category. An unnamed category is not a claim that all products in it behave alike.

Route Destination and review Processing to check
Typing or paste Choose the field and inspect the text yourself. This is the manual baseline used in this guide. The receiving AI service has its own handling rules; the input method does not settle them. This is a workflow distinction.

A dedicated text-entry app Check its current documentation for where text lands and whether it offers the editing or insertion step you need. Feature support is product-specific. CueSpec's Mac companion View Codex tasks, prepare a draft and explicitly reply in the selected conversation. Workflow scope Local transcription and optional service-based text refinement are separate stages; sending to Codex is separate again. Processing stages

The Apple facts here refer to its macOS Tahoe 26 guide. Use the version selector for your Mac's release instead of assuming the same controls or language coverage. This comparison does not rank recognition accuracy or establish compatibility with every field on a particular Mac.

Wispr Flow Dictation: Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Overview Inserts into the active field. An eligible desktop account can enable experimental Press Enter, which can submit after paste; check the chosen mode. General session management is UNKNOWN from these sources. Input controls Recognition is cloud-based. Model improvement, dictation cloud storage and local history are separate choices; app/text context may also be used. Free/Pro and Enterprise improvement defaults differ. Data controls, plan conditions Desktop may save audio for later retry when offline. That is not offline recognition. Recovery depends on saved audio and applicable settings. Recovery
Superwhisper: macOS, Windows, iOS and Android; Linux planned. Overview Cross-app text entry plus Mac-only agent plugins for voice answers, completion notices and approvals. General session-dashboard scope is UNKNOWN here. Agent integration Voice and optional text models are independently local/cloud. Included API routes have vendor-stated no-training/retention commitments; BYOK and receiving apps have separate terms. See the dated-policy note below. Voice models, data flow Local voice models support offline transcription. Local S1-mini cleanup is Pro, English-only, Message/Mail only, on supported Mac/Windows hardware; Windows ARM is excluded. CueSpec: public support matrix lists Mac0.4.5build66, macOS15+, Universal ZIP; other platforms remain planned. Support Documents Codex task viewing, draft preparation and explicit replies in the selected conversation. Latest upstream-host compatibility was not tested here. Workflow Audio recognition is documented as local. In-development optional refinement sends text to a configured CueSpec Server with login; its provider/retention terms are configuration-specific and UNKNOWN here. Final sending is separate. Audio, refinement A downloaded, ready speech model supports raw local drafts. Preparation, updates, optional refinement and Codex delivery have separate connectivity needs. Offline scope

Superwhisper's privacy policy dated 19 June 2024 uses local-only wording, while its published model documentation describes cloud options. This comparison uses the feature-specific paths for capability descriptions; reconciliation of those contractual statements remains UNKNOWN. A local history setting or a no-training statement should not be read as proof that recognition happens locally.

Superwhisper's agent plugins also mean a text-entry app can include conversation-related interaction. Avoid treating “dictation app” and “companion” as mutually exclusive product categories. Compare the particular task and integration rather than assume only one product can surface an agent prompt.

A fictional choice: prepare an English request before reconnecting

Nora uses an Apple Silicon Mac. She wants to prepare an English design explanation in an editor while disconnected, with punctuation and filler cleanup. She will review it and paste it into an existing AI conversation later. She does not need to browse several agent tasks. This is a fictional decision exercise; no software was run.

Her route card is:

Destination now: a local editor.
Destination later: an existing AI conversation I will select myself.
Required now: text available offline, with English cleanup.
Exact names: paste with the keyboard.
Already available in this fictional setup:
Superwhisper Pro and compatible local models prepared beforehand.
Fallback: type or manually edit; do not wait for cloud processing.

Apple Dictation remains a candidate if Nora's actual Mac/language notice supports the processing path she needs; the precise offline result is not established by this guide. Wispr's saved-audio recovery would not establish the immediate offline text she requires. CueSpec documents local raw drafts and manual editing, but its optional service refinement is a separate stage, and task browsing is not Nora's current need.

Given the stated fictional prerequisites, she selects Superwhisper with a local voice model and S1-mini in Message or Mail mode as the documented candidate for this particular cleanup task. If those model, mode, language or license conditions are not met, she uses her manual fallback. This is conditional fit, not a claim that the tool is faster or more accurate. S1-mini conditions

When she reconnects, she opens the intended conversation, checks exact strings and the action requested, and sends deliberately. The receiving AI service's data handling remains a separate decision from how the draft was created.

Route one: a short design explanation

Fictional task: Mira wants to ask her existing AI chat to compare two navigation ideas. The right conversation is already open. There are no filenames or commands in the request.

She can start with typing or macOS Dictation in that field. After entering the explanation, she checks that both alternatives and the requested comparison survived. If that is comfortable, there is no demonstrated need for an additional app.

If she later finds herself repeatedly rewriting the same kind of draft, she can name the missing step before shopping: sentence cleanup, a review buffer or a particular insertion workflow. She should verify that feature in a specific app rather than buy an entire category on an assumed promise.

Route two: an exact refactor request

Fictional task: Dev needs to explain a duplicated billing rule while preserving two exported function names and a threshold.

He speaks or types the reason, then pastes the exact paths, symbols and comparison operator. His key requirement is a precise request, not uninterrupted dictation. A plain text editor plus his existing coding tool may be enough. A voice app becomes relevant only if it improves a step he actually finds awkward.

He reviews the resulting instruction for scope and values. Neither polished prose nor a voice tool can establish that a future code change preserves behavior.

Route three: returning to several Codex tasks

Fictional task: Jules has several Codex conversations and wants to read one answer before adding a follow-up.

The first decision is which conversation needs attention. Typing or system Dictation can supply text after Jules opens it. A supported companion can be worth considering if keeping task views, answers and a reply draft together helps that routine. CueSpec's documented Mac route addresses this conversation workflow; it is not a promise of control over every agent, platform or model. Supported workflow
